Dear California,
You may have very good sushi, nice weather, and even better beaches, but your constitution is a total joke. On one hand you have a simultaneous 2/3 majority requirement for yearly operating budgets and taxation, and a simple majority voter-driven ‘expenditure mandate’ process, leading to the massive financial crises you now endure (as explained on this Economist article) - and on the other you allow a simple voter majority to change the Constitution itself, allowing any psycho extremist group (aka the extreme christian right) with enough money to mobilize enough people to explicitly and constitutionally discriminate against your own citizens. that’s one fucked up version of democrazy you have there.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, too much democracy can be bad for you.
