Farewell to Falwell

US evangelist Jerry Falwell has died. Our condolences go to his family and friends.

He will be remembered as an educator, being the founder of Liberty University which prides itself on the teaching of non-Darwinian science and placing the Bible before fact:

“The Bible is inerrant … word of the living god. It is absolutely infallible, without error in all matters pertaining to faith and practice, as well as in areas such as geography, science, history, etc”

He was a healer. In an attempt to bring the American people together after the the atrocities struck against them on 9/11 he declared:

“I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians … all of them who have tried to secularize America, I point the finger in their face and say: you helped this happen.”

He valued people of all persuasions claiming that:

“If your not a born-again Christian, you’re a failure as a human being.”

Unfortunately he didn’t live to see the completion of one of his dreams:

“I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won’t have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be!”

However he would have taken comfort in the knowledge that, Australian Prime Minister, John Howard continues in the pursuit of this goal.

With each of Mr Howard’s budgets he has increased the amount of public money taken from the Australian public school system, and used it to fund private religious based schools in Australia. Something that would have filled Mr Falwell with hope for the future.

Jerry Falwell will be missed, but just not around here!

When you think about it, it really is just too bad he won’t have realized how wrong he was before the lights went out.
