Catholic Church putting on the spin
The Catholic Church is handing over $41 million dollars to the Randwick Racecourse as part of a compensation package to users of the racecourse.
The Church plans to hold the World Youth Day Papal Mass at the racecourse next year and the compensation is for loss of business to the users of the racecourse and for repairs to the grounds.
Obviously the ammount of money been spent on the World Youth Day has brought down a lot of crtiscism on the Catholic Church. In an effort to fight back the Catholic Church has released a “briefing paper” to Catholic leaders to spin the facts.
It will be interesting to see how they justify handing over a large amount of money to an indsutry that promotes gambling which has caused much grief and hardship to many in the community. Or why they didn’t put the event on at Homebush (Sydney 2000 Olympic site) which has better transport links and is more suited to this style of event. But then the sataions of the cross to various sporting facilities at Homebush wouldn’t involve the public disruption and heavy handed security measures as one based at Randwick. There is no such thing as bad publicity, especially for an organisation which has declining support in Australia.
