I attempted to add a comment to this post to see how the transition went but it’s not working for some reason.. So anyways how did it go? I’ve been thinking about installing Linux, too…

Yep the Disqus comments seem stuffed.

The move so far is fine, couple of minor issues came up and I expect more. Had a problem connecting to the NAS and the remote printer but I figured them out. Because I was already using firefox and thunderbird,  I just had to save the various profiles away and then copy them back when I had installed Ubuntu.OpenOffice just came installed.

Outstanding issues, which flash player, I have the choice of 3?  Which java run time to install (there’s a few to choose from)?  Also got to sort out which virtualisation system to use because I will need to run windows for some apps/games etc.

Before you make the jump I suggest you get one of those run-from-disc linux distros to play with, or set up a dual boo system to play with first.

UPDATE: after talking with a friend I’m going with the Adobe Flash player and OpenJDK (for now). Decided to use VirtualBox as the virualistion system, currently loading up a virtual machine with XP. The plan is to make copies of this clean XP virtual machine for different applications; develpment tools, games, and other apps that I haven’t found repacements for on Ubuntu. Keeping the clean XP vm around means that I can build additional ones quickly. One finally note the default windows theme in Ubuntu is not that good IMHO, I switched to Clearlooks (comes with Ubuntu) and I think it looks a heap better.
