Catholics fight to keep ill gotten gains.
A recent Australian government study showed that private (read religious) Australian schools were being over paid according to the federal funding system based on the socio-economic status of regions where the students’ families lived.
Anglican schools have said that they are opposed to funding above the entitlements under the formula; ie they are happy to get less money. However the Catholic system wants to retain the “funding-maintained” category, which entrenches higher payments to schools.
The overpayments are costing the Australian tax payer up to $2.7 billion (AUD) over the next four years.
A simple solution would be the funding method used in the US, where the government does not fund any religious school.
