Young urged to abstain
The New South Wales Health Department website will have its safe sex message updated during the Catholic World Youth Day to recommend abstinence.
Currently the advice reads, “The most effective way to protect yourself and your new and casual partners is to consistently practise safe sex by always using condoms.”
But during July’s event an addition will be made, “You reduce the risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections by either not having sex or by always practising safe sex, such as using condoms with a water-based lubricant.”
Lee Rhiannon, a Greens MP in the NSW Parliament, said she beleived that the change was a compromise as she understood that the Catholic Church didn’t want the Health Department to give any safe sex message during World Youth Day.
