17-Year old Iraqi Rand Abdel-Qader was brutally murdered by her father in an “honour killing”.
Her crime was falling for a British soldier who she met and only saw at a charity where they both worked as volunteers. All they did was talk.
When her father heard that she had been talking to a foreigner he came home and attacked her. He stood on her throat till she suffocated, then stabbed her.
The mother tried to get help for her daughter by calling her two sons, but when they learned the reason they joined with their father in killing Rand.
At her simple burial her uncles spat in her grave.
The father was arrested and released within two hours. A Basra police officer said “You are in a Muslim society and women should live under religious laws. The father has very good contacts inside the Basra government and it wasn’t hard for him to be released and what he did to be forgotten.”
