Strength of US evangelicals a big myth.
Michael Duffy argues that the presumed importance and strength of the evangelical church in the US is over stated. While new mega-Churches keep popping up Duffy argues that rather than attracting new people to the church they just cannibalises membership from other churches.
According to research quoted by Duffy evangelical numbers have dropped from 12% in 1991 to just 7% of the US population. During the same period the number of non-believers in the US has more than doubled from 14 million to 29 million.
