The US Minerals Management Service has serious misgivings about the practice of “cementing” (seals gaps between well pipe and drill hole to prevent oil leaks), which has been implicated in major oil leaks and fires at a number of offshore rigs.
The MMS recommended the mandatory use of acoustic shut-off devices as used on Norwegian and Brazilian rigs. The US government (under Bush and Cheney) decided not to mandate their use, after lobbying from the oil and related industries.
It’s interesting to note that the company responsible for the “cementing” of the Deepwater Horizon rig was Haliburton (they also did similar work on an Australian rig which also caught fire last August).
Haliburton is Cheney’s old company. Coincidence? I don’t think so.
