Farm in a Container

Verdant Earth Technologies is planning on retrofitting standard shipping containers into mini-farms. Each container will be fitted with five shelves on which the plants will sit in a nutrient-rich solution. They are currently experimenting with various artificial lighting options to see which gives the best bang for the buck.

Because the plants won’t be in soil they will require a fraction of the water required to grow the plants normally. And because the system is enclosed the need for pesticide drops close to zero.

To date the system can produce 2,000 head of lettuce in a month, compared to 90 days in a field.

I guess you can stack the containers for more intense farming.
