“Competitors in the 24th Marathon des Sables in the Sahara Desert climb the first dunes of Merzouga, about 300km south of the Moroccan city of Ouarzazate, March 30, 2009. The race is run over 6 days and covers 243km (equivalent to nearly six marathons). Competitors have to carry everything they will need for the duration (apart from a tent) and water is rationed and handed out at each checkpoint.”
